Savoring Summer in Kirkland One Bite at a Time

A Flavorful Journey Through Kirkland’s Summer

There’s something undeniably beautiful about summer in Kirkland. The waterfront vibes, sunlit strolls through Marina Park, and, of course, the fresh, seasonal bounty that seems to taste even better with a little PNW sunshine.

Add to the mix a plate bursting with colorful, local goodness, and suddenly your meal isn’t just a meal but is now pure summer magic, all served with a side of joy.

For the residents of Kirkland’s most welcoming assisted and independent living communities at MorningStar, summer dining is all about balance. Sure, we all indulge a little (hard to say no to fresh peach cobbler!), but staying healthy and connected is the heart of every shared plate. It’s a good food, good mood philosophy.

Whether you’re DIY-ing a refreshing light dish for dinner in your apartment or meeting friends at our community dining events, summer is the season to truly relish every bite and every moment.

Fresh Produce That’s Pure Sunshine

Why shop seasonally in the first place? Two reasons.

First, nothing beats the flavor of a farm-fresh tomato that practically tasted like it jumped off a vine at Kirkland Farmers Market (ever been? Add it to your to-do if not!). Second, seasonal produce is bursting with all the nutrients your body needs this time of year.

Here are a few star performers you’ll want on your plate this season:

  • Berries: The ultimate Kirkland snack. Locally grown, naturally sweet, and packed with brain and heart-friendly antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries frequently make an appearance at MorningStar.
  • Melons: Juicy, refreshing, and full of fiber to keep things moving (you know what we mean). Both watermelon and cantaloupe are great picks.
  • Tomatoes: Think vibrant reds and yellows, ready to nail your summer caprese recipe. Lycopene and a bold punch of Vitamins A and C are just a few nutrients to pay attention to.
  • Crispy Cool Cucumbers: Cucumbers are hydrating heroes loaded with vitamin K. Pair them with hummus or toss them in a salad for some instant chill.

Light Bites for Long Summer Days

The last thing anyone wants on a hot day is heavy, sluggish meals weighing you down. To that goal, here are Kirkland’s must-try summer dishes, perfect for keeping things flavorful yet light.

  • Berry Bliss Parfait: Layers on layers of fresh berries, protein-packed Greek yogurt, and crunchy, fiber-rich granola make this recipe great for breakfast, a late-night snack, or anything in between.
  • Crispy Cucumber and Tomato Salad: A refreshing mix of cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced cucumbers, olive oil, and a sprinkle of feta cheese. Easy.
  • Grill and Chill Protein: Fire up grilled chicken or fish paired with roasted zucchini or colorful bell peppers. It’s hearty enough to fuel the day, without making you feel like an afternoon nap needs to be on the agenda.

Sip Your Way to Chill

Staying hydrated in summer requires more than just guzzling gallons of water (although that’s important, too). There are plenty of delicious ways to stay cool and hydrated Kirkland-style.

  • Infused Refreshers: Liven up your water game by adding slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries. Feeling fancy? A sprig of mint never hurt.
  • Cool Soups: Who says soup is just for winter? Chilled gazpacho or a cucumber dill yogurt soup = refreshing perfection.
  • Fruit: Watermelon, peaches, and grapes are all options for hydration that doubles as dessert.

Food Equals Fun and Fond Memories

At MorningStar of Kirkland, we believe meals are about so much more than what’s on the plate. They’re about the laughs, the stories, and the connections shared over the table.

From themed summer BBQs to chef-led tasting nights (because artisanal mango salsa deserves applause), every meal here is crafted to be an experience. Our chefs create meals with a dash of love and a sprinkle of local inspiration. Saddle up for mouthwatering peach cobbler and zesty grilled salmon that will transport you to foodie heaven.

And the best part? Absolutely no dishes to clean after. Pair the luxury of dining with Kirkland’s most picturesque waterfront vibes, and you’ve got a winning combination for independent living.

Make Every Bite Count

Whether it’s the sweetness of handpicked berries or the simple joy of a meal shared with friends, summer in Kirkland is truly a season to savor. From farm-fresh seasonal delights to stress-free cooking (we handle that for you), you’re free to focus on what matters most—memories, laughter, and flavorful moments.

I have a friend whose grandma is living here that I got to visit when I was in town. The facility is clean, modern and very well run. We got to dine in at the cafe and food was actually impressive. Smiles throughout from every employee during our visit. I know it's not the cheapest but they absolutely are worth the price.

Living in here is just like in a big family. Everyone in here is very friendly. We play games together with fun and laughter. We also concern and help each others. There are lots of pleasant and healthy activities like Group Exercise, Tai Chi , Yoga, Line Dancing, Jazzercise, Tone & Tighten, Cards Creation, Floral Arranging, Painting, Ceramics, Bingo, Water Aerobics, etc. Also we may do workouts in the gym or go swimming in the pool freely. Besides we will have Music Appreciation every week in our restaurant sipping on our wine while enjoying the music. I like living in here as it is like traveling on a cruise. We eat three meals a day for free and no need to worry about washing dishes. Our chef listens to our needs. The meals are good although a little salty sometimes. It is almost like in a hotel as once every week our cleaning team would come to clean the room and make beds. On the whole all staffs are very friendly and helpful. Morning Star in Kirkland is truly a super choice for independent retired living

We have been here 8 months and are still grateful that we found this place. A faith based community means that everyone is supported in honoring their faith in their higher power. We have Christians, Jews, Muslims. The staff are super friendly which means they are grateful to be working in a place where most residents feel like a large family group. The new leader, Karen, is super friendly and the staff seem very happy to have her as their leader. Multiple events: movie nights, outside musical entertainment on Tuesdays happy hour are so much fun. People don't have to drive, there is always transportation when needed. The price is expensive but includes everything! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, housecleaning, internet, and staff that are all super friendly. In house Physical Therapy, exercise equipment, heated indoor salt water pool, in house hair and nail salon. Location is another plus: so close to doctors, hospital, shopping, and 5 minutes from Juanita Beach a great place to take a daily walk. Come give it a try!

I very much enjoy coming to visit my grandma. The flowers are always so beautiful and everyone always seems to be happy and having a good time. The food is delicious and the bistro is the gem of the dining experience. Arthur is the friendliest person and takes his craft seriously. I order something different every time to see what fun garnish he comes up with. My grandma is always telling me funny stories about the bistro and I feel happy knowing she has a companion every time she comes to get her glass of Chardonnay.

Morningstar of Kirkland is a wonderful, independent community for seniors. My parents lived here for the past year and needed to move because they need more care. They loved Kirkland so much they moved into another Morningstar community that has assisted living and memory care. Kirkland is very well managed and the staff is friendly, kind and knowledgeable. The building is fairly new, attractive and well maintained. The residents have also created a real community atmosphere. Highly recommend without any reservation.
