The Best Creative Outlets for Kirkland Seniors to Stay Active and Inspired

Long summers in Kirkland call for more than just iced coffees and shady spots by Lake Washington (though we wouldn’t say no to either).

If you’ve been feeling a bit drained from the heat or just the hustle of daily life, we’ve got good news. There’s something that can help you stay sharp, engaged, and joyful this season, all without breaking a sweat: creativity.

Creative activities can help you refresh both your mind and spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a novice who’s just dipping your toes into something new, flexing those creative muscles helps you pass the time while bringing along a slew of mental, spiritual, and physical benefits.

Grab a paintbrush, pick up a pen, or strum a guitar. And keep reading to see just how creativity can energize your days and why Kirkland is the perfect backdrop for your next masterpiece.

Kirkland Creativity Keeps the Brain Buzzing

Did you know creative activities can help keep your brain in tip-top shape? Studies show that staying creative boosts brainpower, builds new neural pathways, and helps preserve cognitive health as we age.

Whether you’re painting the sparkling waters of Lake Washington, writing memories of summer picnics at Marina Park, or sketching a golden retriever on a paddleboard (whatever makes you happy!), connecting with your inner artist strengthens problem-solving skills and memory. It’s a workout, but for your brain, and minus the burpees.

As an added bonus, creativity also improves overall well-being and brings people together. There’s something magical about seeing your ideas come to life, whether you’re crafting solo or bonding over a shared project with your friends at your independent living community.

Fun and Creative Things to Do for Kirkland Seniors

Not sure where to begin? Don’t sweat it. Kirkland is a community that offers endless inspiration for discovering your creative spark. Here are a few ideas to get started and keep things lively.

Put Your Inner Artist to Work

Appreciate the dense greenery and serene lakeside views of Kirkland? Grab your paints and recreate those picturesque scenes. Whether you’re sketching Denny Park’s trails or capturing the whimsy of Kirkland’s waterfront sculptures, art therapy is real and oh-so-enjoyable.

DIY Your Heart Out

Kirkland’s vibe practically screams “crafting capital.” Make some inspired décor from treasures you’ve collected on the Cross Kirkland Corridor trail or knit a cozy blanket for those cooler PNW evenings. Bonus points if you add a touch of the region’s chic natural beauty to any of your creations.

Write Yourself Into the Story

Got a cherished memory from that lazy afternoon at Juanita Beach? Or maybe you’ve been inspired by your favorite spot at Kirkland Urban? Write it down! Whether it’s journaling, short storytelling, or a “day in the life” poem, writing is great for keeping the mind engaged and creative juices flowing.

Find Your Rhythm

Remember that dusty ukulele or keyboard you’ve been meaning to learn? Now’s the perfect time to strike a chord! Sprinkle in a Pacific Northwest vibe by learning songs by Nirvana or Brandi Carlile (some of our favorite local legends) for a bit of extra fun.

Virtual Field Trips With a Twist

Feeling that itch to explore, but need to beat the heat? Immerse yourself in interactive online tours of the Kirkland Arts Center or check out virtual exhibits from local art galleries. You could even join a Zoom poetry group with fellow Kirkland residents to share your thoughts and ideas.

I have a friend whose grandma is living here that I got to visit when I was in town. The facility is clean, modern and very well run. We got to dine in at the cafe and food was actually impressive. Smiles throughout from every employee during our visit. I know it's not the cheapest but they absolutely are worth the price.

Living in here is just like in a big family. Everyone in here is very friendly. We play games together with fun and laughter. We also concern and help each others. There are lots of pleasant and healthy activities like Group Exercise, Tai Chi , Yoga, Line Dancing, Jazzercise, Tone & Tighten, Cards Creation, Floral Arranging, Painting, Ceramics, Bingo, Water Aerobics, etc. Also we may do workouts in the gym or go swimming in the pool freely. Besides we will have Music Appreciation every week in our restaurant sipping on our wine while enjoying the music. I like living in here as it is like traveling on a cruise. We eat three meals a day for free and no need to worry about washing dishes. Our chef listens to our needs. The meals are good although a little salty sometimes. It is almost like in a hotel as once every week our cleaning team would come to clean the room and make beds. On the whole all staffs are very friendly and helpful. Morning Star in Kirkland is truly a super choice for independent retired living

We have been here 8 months and are still grateful that we found this place. A faith based community means that everyone is supported in honoring their faith in their higher power. We have Christians, Jews, Muslims. The staff are super friendly which means they are grateful to be working in a place where most residents feel like a large family group. The new leader, Karen, is super friendly and the staff seem very happy to have her as their leader. Multiple events: movie nights, outside musical entertainment on Tuesdays happy hour are so much fun. People don't have to drive, there is always transportation when needed. The price is expensive but includes everything! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, housecleaning, internet, and staff that are all super friendly. In house Physical Therapy, exercise equipment, heated indoor salt water pool, in house hair and nail salon. Location is another plus: so close to doctors, hospital, shopping, and 5 minutes from Juanita Beach a great place to take a daily walk. Come give it a try!

I very much enjoy coming to visit my grandma. The flowers are always so beautiful and everyone always seems to be happy and having a good time. The food is delicious and the bistro is the gem of the dining experience. Arthur is the friendliest person and takes his craft seriously. I order something different every time to see what fun garnish he comes up with. My grandma is always telling me funny stories about the bistro and I feel happy knowing she has a companion every time she comes to get her glass of Chardonnay.

Morningstar of Kirkland is a wonderful, independent community for seniors. My parents lived here for the past year and needed to move because they need more care. They loved Kirkland so much they moved into another Morningstar community that has assisted living and memory care. Kirkland is very well managed and the staff is friendly, kind and knowledgeable. The building is fairly new, attractive and well maintained. The residents have also created a real community atmosphere. Highly recommend without any reservation.
